Micron Opened Global Development Center in Hyderabad
Micron Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) celebrated the grand opening of its Global Development Centre in the southern Indian technology hub of Hyderabad. The site will play a key role in contributing to the development of technologies behind breakthroughs in a wide range of areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. Guests of honor at today’s ceremony were Government of Telangana Minister for IT, Industries and Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao; National Institute for Transforming India Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant; and Chief Secretary of the Government of Telangana SK Joshi.
“We’re delighted to launch our Global Development Centre in Hyderabad and expand our team of engineers, researchers, developers and IT specialists,” said Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. “Leveraging global talent, like our new Hyderabad team members, helps us drive innovation and stay at the forefront of emerging memory technologies.”
India provides Micron with access to a highly educated and talented workforce. The skill set of Micron’s employees in Hyderabad includes information technology functions and engineering talent who can design and develop high-quality, cutting-edge memory and storage solutions. Micron’s team of engineers, researchers and developers around the world drive innovation essential for managing the complexity of the company’s global operations network, which includes supply chain, procurement, manufacturing, test and assembly, packaging, information technology and quality organizations.
Micron first expanded its footprint in India when it opened its operations site in Bengaluru in April 2019. Micron’s India presence in Bengaluru and now in Hyderabad complements the company’s global centers of excellence around the world, providing design and product engineering functions for next-generation memory and high-value storage solutions. Located in the heart of Hyderabad’s IT corridor and spanning 350,000 square feet, Micron’s office includes six purpose-built design and verification labs.
The company aims to fill a wide range of roles in Hyderabad, including those in engineering, science, research and information technology. Micron expects to hire approximately 2,000 employees in India within the next few years.
Supporting the community in India
In line with Micron’s commitment to investing in the local communities in which it operates, the company also announced that it is awarding a $100,000 grant to the Akshaya Patra Foundation’s midday-meal program through the Micron Foundation. The program helps eliminate classroom hunger, increase school attendance, address malnutrition, improve concentration and provide employment opportunities for women. The donation will benefit 5,000 children and their families for an entire school year. Micron is also encouraging team members to volunteer and support Akshaya Patra in a variety of ways.
Over 700 employees, customers, suppliers, distributors and community partners, as well as Micron Board Chairman Robert E. Switz and two dozen senior Micron executives, joined Mehrotra at the Global Development Centre grand opening. Mehrotra’s visit came soon after his participation in the World Economic Forum’s India Economic Summit in New Delhi, where he and a Micron delegation met with key leaders from government, the private sector and academia to address strategic issues affecting India.
