Google has announced the activation of Emergency Location Service (ELS) in Android in India, with Uttar Pradesh becoming the first state to fully integrate enhanced caller location into its 112 emergency services.

ELS is a built-in Android feature that automatically shares a caller’s precise location with emergency responders when a 112 call or SMS is placed. Using signals from GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks, the service can provide location accuracy of up to 50 meters, even in situations where calls drop shortly after connecting, helping first responders reach people faster when every second matters.

Importantly, ELS is designed with privacy at its core: it activates only during emergency calls, is free of charge, and location data is shared directly from the user’s device to emergency services, never collected or stored by Google.

The announcement outlines how this milestone could pave the way for other Indian states to adopt similar life-saving technology.
