Blood Sugar Test

Introduction

Our body is made of a complex system where different chemical reactions go on for the process of life. One such chemical phenomenon is blood sugar. Blood sugar is the sugar circulating in the blood, which is used to produce energy for the functioning of our body. After that, the pancreas produces insulin hormone for storing energy in our cells to use later. However, we don't have the same blood sugar levels every time. But it should be between normal levels so our body can work properly.

If a person has abnormal blood sugar levels, they can develop diabetes. In diabetes, the blood sugar levels can be very high or sometimes very low. This condition creates massive problems in our bodies, e.g., decreased sugar levels will have different low sugar symptoms like fatigue. Hence, we need to maintain normal sugar levels to avoid these symptoms.

What are the high and low sugar symptoms?

As we know, the pancreas produces insulin hormone to store sugar from our food. Our cells use sugar as energy to make our bodies work properly. But we can have an abnormal insulin system.

When we have an abnormal insulin system, our body has either more or less insulin than required. Hence, we experience high or low sugar symptoms of abnormal blood sugar. So, It is beneficial to know about different symptoms to become aware of our health.

When our body has a low sugar level, the following low sugar symptoms are seen:

  • Weakness
  • Lack of energy
  • Shaking
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Fatigue

Similarly, high sugar level symptoms are as follows:

  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Excessive urination
  • Increased hunger

If we show the symptoms, then we should take a blood sugar test to know where our blood sugar levels stand. It will help us to prevent any fatal disease by taking early steps.

How to measure blood sugar levels?

If we show any high or low blood symptoms, we should take a test to know our sugar levels. The standard three tests suggested by doctors to know our sugar levels are:

  • Fasting blood sugar test
  • Glucose Tolerance Test
  • A1C Test

What do the different blood sugar levels indicate?

When we have abnormal blood sugar levels, it can lead to many health issues in our bodies. So, we have to monitor our blood sugar levels to be healthy. Hence, we need to understand the different blood sugar levels and what they indicate.

Fasting blood sugar test

  • Normal blood sugar: If our body has 99 mg/dL or a lower blood sugar level.
  • Prediabetes blood sugar: When our body has a fasting blood sugar level between 100–125 mg/dL.
  • High blood sugar: Our blood sugar above 126 mg/dL indicates that we have diabetes.

Glucose Tolerance Test

  • Normal blood sugar: If our body has 99-140 mg/dL.
  • Prediabetes blood sugar: When our body has a  blood sugar level between 140–199 mg/dL.
  • High blood sugar: Our blood sugar of 200 mg/dL or above in the test shows that we have diabetes.

A1C Test

  • Normal blood sugar: If our body has below 5.7% in the test.
  • Prediabetes blood sugar: When our body has a blood sugar level between 5.7–6.4%.
  • High blood sugar: Blood sugar of 6.5% or above on the test suggests that we have diabetes.

How to maintain a normal blood sugar level?

We should take the necessary measures if we have high or low blood sugar. Otherwise, abnormal blood sugar levels can lead to many diseases like coma, cardiovascular disease and even death. So, we must be precautious with our health to lead a healthy life.

We should monitor our sugar levels if we experience any of the high or low sugar symptoms. The best possible way is to consult our doctors about which medicine to take, the food we need to eat, and other do's and don'ts.

Conclusion

To sum up, our body gets sugar as energy from our food. We all have different blood sugar levels. But having high or low sugar levels can cause diabetes. We need to test our body sugar levels when our body shows high or low blood sugar symptoms. We must consult doctors to prevent fatal diseases if found in the range.
