A 70-year-old retired employee, suffering from severe heart disease and unable to carry out his daily routine due to breathlessness and swollen feet, underwent a life-saving procedure at Gleneagles Hospital, Hyderabad. The patient, who had been battling worsening symptoms for over two years despite continuous medication, was diagnosed with severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR)—a condition where blood leaks backward into the heart instead of flowing to the rest of the body.
Dr. Sai Sudhakar, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, performed the Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) procedure using MyClip, a device recently developed by Indian medtech company Meril Life Sciences. This marks the first time in Telugu speaking state that a patient has been treated with this indigenously developed device.
Explaining the case, Dr. Sudhakar said, “Patients with severe MR are often at high surgical risk due to age and other health issues. MR, particularly if untreated, has a devastating mortality rate—over 50% of patients may not survive without timely intervention, and 1-year mortality can be as high as 57%. For those who cannot undergo surgery, the TEER procedure offers a safe and effective alternative. What makes MyClip particularly significant is that it is a Make-in-India product—bringing world-class technology at a far more cost-effective price compared to imported devices, thus making advanced care more accessible to Indian patients”
The minimally invasive procedure, performed through a small puncture in the thigh, took about an hour. The patient was shifted to the ICU, recovered within a day, and was discharged soon after. He is now able to resume his daily activities.
In India, around 1.5 million people are known to have severe mitral regurgitation, of which at least 1.2 million are due to heart failure or post-heart attack conditions. In Telugu speaking states, with a population of nearly 10 crore, many elderly patients and those with diabetes, hypertension, or weak hearts face similar challenges. For patients who do not respond to medicines and are unfit for open-heart surgery, this new transcatheter valve clip procedure provides a much-needed solution.
Meril’s MyClip TEER System, developed in India, enables precise closure of the mitral valve flaps, effectively preventing the backward flow of blood into the lungs. The minimally invasive procedure takes about one hour, and patients can usually return home within 3–5 days. After discharge, most patients can quickly return to daily activities such as walking and light household work.
Until recently, this treatment was available in India only through expensive imported clips. With the introduction of Meril’s MyClip, developed under the Make in India initiative, opens a new chapter for patients in affordable, advanced cardiac care for such patients.
