As of November 2, 2024, Punjab's paddy procurement is making significant progress in the Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024-25, with 85.41 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) purchased by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies. This effort is part of a broader Central Government initiative to support farmers and the agricultural economy, disbursing a total of Rs 19800 crore to benefit around 4 lakh farmers in the state.

The paddy, purchased at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 2320 per quintal for Grade ‘A’ paddy, ensures a stable income for Punjab’s farming community. This year's procurement began on October 1, 2024, despite initial delays caused by unseasonal rains in September, which increased moisture content in the crop. With these challenges resolved, the procurement is now progressing smoothly across Punjab's 2927 operational mandis and temporary yards.

To further streamline the process, the Punjab State Government has designated 4132 millers to assist in paddy shelling, with 4640 millers applying for the role. This allocation enables efficient handling and processing of paddy, ensuring that the crop moves seamlessly from fields to storage facilities.

The Central Government has set a target of procuring 185 LMT of paddy in Punjab by November 30, 2024, to bolster the food security reserves. The Centre’s active involvement, funding, and allocation strategies underscore a commitment to agricultural stability and farmer welfare in one of India’s leading rice-producing states.

With the paddy procurement process running at full pace, Punjab farmers are poised to benefit from a well-orchestrated system designed to mitigate economic pressures and ensure fair compensation. This initiative not only supports Punjab’s agricultural sector but also aligns with the broader goals of national food security and rural development.
