Trade & Industry badly effected by J&K Floods

The natural calamity in Jammu and Kashmir is taking the state into a tough situation. With telephone connectivity getting lost, the situation in the valley is getting bad to worst. The J&K floods have also badly effected the industries and trade.

Even as the Indian armed forces have been put to use in the ongoing massive rescue and relief operation in the flood affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir, telephone networks are down and roadways blocked, preventing communication with the affected areas. According to General Secretary, Bari Brahmana Industrial Association (BBIA), Lalit Mahajan, the thousands of micro and small units in J&K have been massively affected by the flood.

“We have been unable to contact our association members as also the units as the telephone networks are completely down.  The units in unaffected areas are also directly or indirectly dependent on other units from the affected areas.  Therefore the impact will be seen on the entire industry,” Mahajan said.

Saying it was difficult to make any loss estimate as of now, “The entire city is filled with water, the roads are inaccessible and there is no power.”

Needless to say, tourism has been badly affected owing to the worst floods in more than five decades that have killed over 175 and rendered thousands homeless.

Significantly, the rains have not been restricted to Kashmir, they are equally lethal across border.  According to reports over 110 have been killed in flash floods in Pakistan, including in Pak-Occupied –Kashmir. Punjab has also been affected as Chenab River is in spate.

According to official data, so far 20,000 stranded people have been evacuated in different regions of J&K.  The army has distributed 4,000 blankets, 90 tents, 23,000 litres of water and 600 kilograms biscuits in the flood-affected areas. Further, 60 medical teams have swung into action.
