With its commitment towards an efficient and effective consumer regime, the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) has always stood for the proper evolution of the consumer ecosystem, in keeping with moving times and technology.
In this context, ICEA was an important stakeholder at a consultation held on 17.08.2022 by the Department of Consumer Affairs, under the Chairmanship of Shri Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary, Consumer Affairs, to discuss the viability of a common charging port (USB-C) for electronics devices, including mobile phones.
As the apex body representing the electronics manufacturing industry in India, ICEA is committed to this cause.
“The charging port ecosystem has largely become rationalised, with the vast majority of feature phones (~375 million) using micro-USB, and vast majority of smartphones (~500 million) using USB-C. Low power devices (such as hearables / wearables, Bluetooth speakers etc) are also moving towards USB-C for higher-end items,” stated Mr. Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA.
“We welcome the healthy discussion under the aegis of the Department and particularly the Secretary, and emphasise the need to evaluate any policy in light of environmental concerns, the consistent push towards innovation, and India’s aspirations of being the leading manufacturer and exporter of chargers in the world. More particularly, we fully support the Department’s view of setting up expert groups to examine the issue in more detail, in the Indian context.”
