Mr. Shashi Shanker has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC). The newly-appointed CMD is an industry veteran with over 30 years of experience in diverse Exploration and Production (E and P) activities.
Shanker will take over the reins from the outgoing CMD, Dinesh K. Sarraf, on October 1. He will hold the post till March 2021.
He is a Petroleum Engineer from the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad and also holds an MBA degree with specialisation in Finance.
Shanker has also received executive education from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.
Prior to his appointment as Director (T and FS) in 2012, he has progressed through senior management roles in various work-centers. He was acclaimed for his performance in spearheading the deep/ultra-deep water campaign of ONGC which was christened 'Sagar Samriddhhi'.
Under his leadership, the ONGC drilled the deepest deep-water well covering a water depth of 3,174 m, which holds a world record.
During his tenure, the ONGC conceptualised an ambitious companywide project called "DISHA" for creation of a paperless office platform, the implementation of which is now underway.
Shanker is also the Director (In-charge) for the ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC) and the North East Transmission Company Ltd (NETC) besides being on the Board of the ONGC Videsh. He is also the Director (In-charge) and the Member of the High Powered Steering Committee for Government's flagship initiative 'Make-in-India'.
