Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that his government did not let the state's development suffer despite a ban on its mining industry.

"Despite the set back received on account of the ban on mining, one of the engines of economic growth in the state, we did not let the development process suffer," Parrikar said.

He said that infrastructure in the state was being given a boost with the support and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and added that major projects like national highways, bridges, waste management and water supply were being undertaken.

"Goa is poised to take off to the next level of development and it will become a model for the rest of the country," Parrikar claimed.

He was speaking at the civic reception hosted for President Ram Nath Kovind at the NIO Auditorium here which was also attended by Governor Mridula Sinha and Legislative Assembly Speaker Pramod Sawant.

Hailing President Kovind, Parrikar said that the former's life, from a humble beginning to the country's highest Constitutional office, was one of grit, determination and hard work.

"Your (Kovind) achievement will inspire a generation of citizens, especially the youth. Your work as a lawyer connected to free legal aid in Delhi is a shining example of your dedication to the cause of the marginalised and weaker sections of society," Parrikar said.

"We are also aware of your contribution as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1994-2006 during which you served on various Parliamentary committees," Parrikar said about President Kovind.

"As a Parliamentarian, your focus on education in the rural areas by helping in construction of school buildings and helping students get access to better education facilities is well known," the Goa CM said.

Parrikar said Kovinds tenure as Bihar Governor is often praised for the constitution of a judicial commission to investigate irregularities and corruption in the affairs of universities there.

"The praise you received from the political spectrum on the eve of your departure from Bihar was indicative of your attitude and maturity in political, administration and Constitutional matters," Parrikar said.
