In an exclusive interview, Sanjiva Weerawarana, Founder and CEO of WSO2, discusses the company’s India outlook, global expansion plans, and the significance of open-source solutions for businesses. He sheds light on the role of the newly opened Bengaluru office in WSO2’s growth strategy, the evolving perception of open source in India, and how WSO2 bridges the gap between open source and enterprise-grade solutions.

Here are the edited excerpts:

India’s Strategic Importance for WSO2’s Expansion Plans

  1. How does the opening of a new office in Bengaluru fit into WSO2’s global growth strategy, and what is its strategic significance?

A significant milestone in WSO2’s global expansion strategy was the opening of our new office in Bengaluru, which reflects our commitment to being actively present in high-potential markets. India is a crucial market for us due to its robust economic expansion and projected rise to the third-largest economy in the world.

The Bengaluru office complements WSO2’s existing hub in Colombo as we can better serve our global clientele, leveraging India’s highly skilled technical talent to spur innovation and improve service delivery. This collaboration makes it easier for WSO2 to deliver cutting-edge API management, integration, and identity management solutions that are tailored to meet the changing demands of customers around the globe.

Moreover, India’s drive for open-source adoption, particularly in government and public sector digital transformation initiatives, and WSO2's experience align well. As a result, it helps us to achieve our goals of promoting innovation, expanding our global footprint, and offering unique value to customers.

  1. How is WSO2 addressing the common misconception that open-source platforms are entirely free, and what true value do premium solutions offer businesses?

Open source provides transparency, flexibility, and the freedom for businesses to innovate without being locked into proprietary solutions. However, it’s a common misconception that open source means “free of cost.” While the software itself may be freely available, the value for businesses from paying for a subscription comes from the expertise, support, and enterprise-grade features that WSO2 offers.

Our approach bridges the gap between open source and enterprise needs. We provide organizations with the tools and support to implement and scale their digital transformation efforts.

  1. Can you explain the benefits of WSO2’s subscription model and how it differentiates from the traditional perception of open-source as free software?

With a WSO2 subscription, businesses gain access to enterprise-grade features, 24/7 support with SLAs, and updates that ensure security, compliance, and compatibility with evolving standards. Our customers also benefit from expertise through training, consulting, and managed services.

Addressing Security Concerns in Open-Source Enterprise Solutions

  1. How does WSO2 address concerns related to security and support in open-source solutions, especially for enterprises with high transactional volumes?

We incorporate stringent security measures and governance into our products to address security and support issues in open-source solutions, especially for businesses handling large transaction volumes. This dedication is demonstrated by our AI Gateway which offers centralized governance for API traffic in AI-powered applications. It reduces security risks by preventing unwanted traffic, blocking vulnerable points, and performing routine architecture reviews to proactively address any vulnerabilities.

We also have governance policies in place to regulate API access and the flow of sensitive data. To ensure organizational behaviour is in line with technological safeguards to reduce risks like data leakage, such measures are also accompanied by training and awareness. With the help of Egress API Management and similar initiatives, enterprises can feel supported in creating a successful and compliant environment that allows for secure innovation by WSO2.

  1. What potential does WSO2 see in the Indian market for the growth of open-source technology, and how has the perception of open-source evolved here?

WSO2 sees immense potential for the growth of open-source technology in the Indian market, especially with the country’s push towards digital transformation under initiatives like Digital India. The adoption of open-source solutions by Indian government entities and public sector organizations highlights the growing recognition of the benefits of open-source, such as flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to avoid vendor lock-in.

The perception of open-source technology in India has evolved significantly. Initially viewed with skepticism, it is now seen as a viable, secure, and scalable option for enterprises and government projects alike. WSO2’s open-source, API-first approach empowers organisations to rapidly innovate and build secure digital services while maintaining control, making it an attractive choice in the rapidly evolving Indian market.

The Evolving Perception of Open Source in India

  1. What unique challenges does WSO2 face in the Indian market when it comes to promoting the adoption of open-source software

India is a dynamic market with a strong focus on digital transformation, particularly in the public sector via DPI. Governments and large enterprises in India are already among the leading adopters of open-source and WSO2 has been a trusted partner in driving this adoption, so there are no major challenges in promoting adoption. Governments especially look for software freedom, so open source software has been a preferred choice.

  1. What makes WSO2’s open-source solutions appealing for SMEs that are looking for cost-effective alternatives to proprietary software?

Open source technology generally provides SMEs with an alternative to costly proprietary software, where budgets are often constrained. The ability to adopt enterprise-grade technology without exorbitant licensing fees is a game-changer.

Another key factor is the freedom and transparency that open source offers. SMEs can evaluate, adapt, and customize open source solutions like WSO2 to fit their needs without being limited by a one-size-fits-all approach. This flexibility empowers them to innovate and differentiate themselve
