Every District will have Livelihood Incubators: P Udayakumar, NSIC

NSIC (National Small Industries Corporation) is one of the most important name when it comes to the upliftment of Indian entrepreneurship landscape.  In an exclusive interaction with Mr P Udayakumar, Director – Marketing and Planning, NSIC, Faiz Askari, Editor SMEStreet found key priorities of NSIC and the potential of Livelihood Incubators.

While the Modi Government is keen towards creating a positive entrepreneurship friendly ecosystem, what are the priorities of NSIC for next one year?

NSIC as usual, is committed towards enabling the entrepreneurs and self sustainable ecosystem for small business owners. As a priority, we are working on setting up Livelihood Incubators throughout India. The concept of these incubators revolves around creating something valuable and locally relevant for the unskilled people and industry.

These incubators will address the local demands that could be agriculture, industry specific and so on. These incubators will bring best in class technologies related to the local industry which could be anything.

What kind of incubators would they be?

We have selected 20 to 30 technologies based on the local entrepreneurial need and local talent demand. Every district will have its own incubation center which will train and equip the locals with best in class technologies.

What are targets for these incubators?

Eventually every district across India will have one such incubator. This will be achieved in the 12th Five year plan. But for this financial year we are targeting to establish 100 such livelihood incubators.

NSIC as an agency is aggressively working towards enabling Indian SMEs. What is NSIC’s focus for Services sector MSMEs?

MSMEs in the services sector are having huge potential. Although our priority is towards manufacturing segment and we have several programs for the manufacturing segment. But our services sector also requires support and level playing game field. We are building our thought process towards services sector as well. There are various scheme and incentive programs running for this segment. However, we are trying to evolve some model in which Services sector MSMEs should be able to get a fair opportunity and exposure for growth.
