eSports platform Gamerji - a Lead Angels & Unicorn India Ventures portfolio company has grown 5X from April to December 2020. Gamerji platform conducts around 100 tournaments every day for gamers to compete, communicate, share content and win cash prizes. The pandemic and lockdown helped boost user expansion from 200k to more than 1 million users per month.
Why eSports platform
eSports as an industry is fairly new in the Indian market. Prior to Gamerji, most of the tournaments were either hosted offline or using social media platforms. Registrations, player management & payments were handled using different platforms. This was rather cumbersome for a casual gamer who on an average spends more than 2 hours everyday playing online games.
Soham Thacker saw this as an opportunity and launched Gamerji in 2019 bringing all aspects of online game tournaments under one roof. From 15 tournaments a day in March’20 the company today hosts nearly 100 tournaments daily for games like Fifa, Free Fire, Clash Royale, Call of Duty mobile etc.
“At Gamerji, we have researched and understood the mindset of casual gamers who are looking for an opportunity to become famous and make money using their skills; Gamerji is a platform which provides them with this opportunity,” says Soham“In Soham, we saw a founder passionate about gaming and a vision to make Gamerji ‘The Destination’ for casual gamers. His understanding of the target customer segment and linkages in the global ecosystem combined with execution capabilities impressed our investor members. With Online gaming coming of age in India and 190 million gamers in India, we see a tremendous opportunity ahead as the company scales up its reach,” says Sushanto Mitra, CEO of Lead Angels Network. “We are also elated to have Unicorn India as co-investors,” Mr. Mitra informed.
“The gaming industry is growing at a full steed and the nascent e-gaming platform business will grow even faster. We are delighted to partner with Lead Angels in investing in Soham - a founder with sheer focus and very high potential” says Bhaskar Majumdar, Managing partner at Unicorn India Ventures. “The growing Indian gaming content and tournaments along with other global properties makes Gamerji an attractive investment for us,” he adds.
About the Founders
Gamerji was launched in 2019 by Soham Thacker, a Rutgers University graduate. Soham returned to India in 2012, having worked for 4 years in US, to start his entrepreneurial journey. A gaming aficionado, he felt the timing for a venture in the same was not right. Like any other young entrepreneur Soham saw his share of troubles and a constant family pressure to move back after two failed ventures. He scaled his third venture ‘Just Mexican’ across 6 cities and sold the same. The bounty received was used in partly seeding Gamerji to attract casual gamers across age groups.
