Gen Z, which now constitutes over 27% of India’s workforce is reshaping workplace dynamics with new priorities. Apna.co, India’s leading jobs and professional networking platform, recently surveyed 10,000 Gen Z professionals to understand their career aspirations, workplace preferences, and growth expectations. The survey reveals a significant mindset shift: 8 out of 10 respondents prioritise mentorship and clear career growth pathways over traditional metrics like salary, reflecting a stronger focus on personal and professional development. Unlike previous generations, where financial stability was the primary concern, Gen Z adopts a more deliberate approach, seeking clarity and purpose in their careers. They aim to build skills that naturally lead to rewards, emphasising a future-oriented, strategic mindset over short-term gains.

Additionally, a positive work environment emerged as a critical factor for 74% of respondents, underscoring the importance of inclusivity, respect, and active engagement. Unlike earlier generations, who often overlooked mentorship and structured learning, Gen Z professionals demand continuous feedback, collaboration, and recognition. They reject working in isolation or receiving occasional acknowledgement, instead valuing workplaces that align personal and professional growth. They seek to understand their roles within the larger organisational mission, actively sharing ideas and contributing meaningfully. This marks a shift from routine, siloed work towards a culture of curiosity, mentorship, and impactful teamwork, emphasising their need for holistic growth and purpose-driven careers.

The survey also highlights that 68% of Gen Z prefer a hybrid working model over fully remote or onsite roles. This preference reflects their recognition of the value of team collaboration and in-person mentorship for skill development and cultural alignment. Hybrid work allows them to benefit from office interactions while maintaining the flexibility to focus on creative, innovation-driven projects independently. This balance enhances productivity and ensures sustainable work-life integration, addressing the burnout challenges prevalent in today’s workforce. By combining collaboration with flexibility, hybrid work empowers Gen Z to thrive professionally and personally in dynamic workplace environments.

Nirmit Parikh, Founder and CEO of apna.co, commented on the survey findings, stating, “At apna, we believe the future of work is being shaped by the aspirations and values of the emerging workforce. The Gen Z generation is redefining professional success—moving beyond monetary rewards to seek purposeful, growth-oriented roles. They are curious, self-aware, and eager to contribute meaningfully while expecting clear career trajectories and alignment with their personal values. Through our annual surveys, we aim to decode these evolving trends, providing businesses with actionable insights to bridge generational expectations. The findings are not just data points; they are a call to action for companies to reimagine workforce engagement strategies and foster environments where talent feels empowered and valued. As Gen Z continues to drive this transformation, businesses must align with this vision of purpose and progress to thrive in the future of work.”

The survey was conducted with 10,000 Gen Z professionals between October & November to explore Gen Z’s professional preferences and workplace expectations. The survey highlights the generation’s emphasis for workplaces that foster skill development, collaboration, and work-life balance.
