Extreme IX, India’s market-leading Internet Exchange platform, today announced that it has been acquired by Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) (“Megaport”), the world’s leading Network as a Service (NaaS) provider. The transaction will see Extreme IX become the foundation of Megaport’s expansion into one of the world’s fastest-growing digital infrastructure markets, while continuing to serve and grow its established ecosystem of partners and customers across India.

Extreme IX carries the highest Internet Exchange traffic in India exceeding 4 Tbps, and interconnects more than 400 networks across seven cities and 49 locations. Through this acquisition, Megaport gains Internet Exchanges in the major Indian metros of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Pune – and a seasoned in-country team spanning operations, support, sales, finance, and leadership. By combining Extreme IX’s neutral, engineering-driven platform with Megaport’s global software-defined network (SDN), customers in India and around the world will gain access to new capabilities – from cloud connectivity and data center interconnects to automated, scalable networking options across borders.

Raunak Maheshwari, Country Head – India at Extreme IX, said “This is an important milestone for Extreme IX and for the Indian internet ecosystem. Over the years, our partners have trusted us with a significant share of India’s internet traffic and helped us build a truly neutral, community-driven Internet Exchange across multiple cities and data centres. Joining Megaport is the next chapter in that journey.”

“By bringing Extreme IX into Megaport’s global platform, we can give our existing ecosystem continuity and stability, while opening the door to new services, automation, and reach. Our priority remains the same: protect what already works well for our members, and then build on it to deliver even more value.”

Michael Reid, Chief Executive Officer of Megaport, said “Through the Extreme IX acquisition, Megaport is combining India’s most trusted Internet Exchange platform with our global SDN. This expands our reach, accelerates our entry into India, and gives customers seamless, high-performance connectivity across one of the world’s largest economies.”

The Extreme IX network across India will be integrated into Megaport’s global platform, enabling a phased rollout of Megaport services over the coming months, including cloud connectivity, data center interconnects, virtual edge, and compute services. This integration will expand Megaport’s global footprint to 27 countries and further strengthen its presence across the Asia Pacific region, bringing together two complementary platforms to deliver enhanced capabilities for customers in India and worldwide.

What this means for Extreme IX customers and partners

For existing Extreme IX customers and partners, day-to-day operations remain unchanged:

  • All existing Extreme IX services, ports, and peering relationships will continue without interruption
  • Megaport will continue operating the Internet Exchange and is committed to maintaining everything that already works well today.
  • The entire Extreme IX team remains in place; customers will continue working with the same people for support and operations
  • As integration progresses, new services, automation, and network expansions will be introduced gradually, with clear communication ahead of any changes

Extreme IX will continue to operate as a carrier-neutral and data-centre-neutral Internet Exchange, focused on helping India move further up the global broadband rankings by improving speed, reliability, and affordability for millions of users.
