When we hear "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle," our minds typically wander to thoughts of cleaning up our environment. But for me, these three words bring a different image to mind 3R ZeroWaste and its visionary CEO, Mr. Shiv Rao Challa. A man with an unyielding mindset and a simple yet powerful belief: “Let’s build a world without waste.”
The inception of this grand idea took place in the unlikeliest of places, a room in his flat abroad. It was during the global shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many struggled to stay afloat. While most were struggling with uncertainty, Shiv Rao Challa found clarity and purpose. Instead of viewing the pandemic as a setback, he saw it as an opportunity, one that would not only redefine his career but also make a lasting impact on the world.
With a vision so profound, he made a life-changing decision to leave his secure job behind. This bold move marked the beginning of his journey into an essential yet often overlooked field: waste management and sustainability.
Early life and thoughts
Shiv Rao Challa’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence and a winning mindset. With a strong academic background in engineering, his foundation was solid. Yet, it was his early passion for sports that truly shaped his character. As a sports enthusiast in his school days, Shiv embraced the mindset that in sports, you either win or lose, and he always aimed to win. This competitive spirit drove him to push his limits, not just on the field but in every aspect of his life. His dedication to constantly improving, paired with a remarkable level of patience in accepting both the good and the bad with a smile, has played a crucial role in his growth.
Beyond his perseverance, Shiv's success can also be attributed to his innovative thinking and relentless efforts in his chosen field. He understands that setbacks and failures are a part of the process, and he never let them deter him. Instead, he viewed mistakes as opportunities to learn, continuously striving to turn his ideas into reality. This attitude of never giving up, despite the challenges, has been instrumental in shaping his journey as an entrepreneur. Shiv’s story is a reminder that with the right mindset, resilience, and a willingness to embrace both wins and losses, success becomes a matter of time.
Turning Obstacles into Opportunities
Walking on the path toward his dream, Shiv Rao Challa faced numerous challenges, but his passion for sustainability and electronic waste management only grew stronger. Recognizing the impact of discarded electronics on the environment, he took it upon himself to educate and raise awareness among people about the dangers posed by electronic waste, even emphasizing how a simple mobile phone lying near your pillow could harm the environment. With a vision of a more sustainable future, Shiv began to share knowledge about the importance of waste management and sustainability, introducing concepts like the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—that are central to the mission of ZeroWaste.
Forming a dedicated team wasn’t easy, as convincing people to clean their surroundings for the benefit of others often met with resistance. However, Shiv persisted and found individuals who shared his passion for the cause. Together, they built a team of like-minded and hardworking individuals, all united by the goal of creating a cleaner and greener planet. Their collective efforts are aimed at preserving the Earth for future generations, ensuring that sustainable practices become a part of everyday life.
Overcoming the Hurdles
In the heart of communities living near piles of waste, many children had given up on their studies, spending their days running between sacks of garbage. The situation was especially challenging in areas with large populations from Assam and Bengal, who made up a significant part of this marginalized group. Shiv Challa, rather than approaching the problem with confrontation, chose a different path. He started by introducing himself—sharing who he was, what he did, and how his work could potentially transform their world. His focus was on making people understand the importance of waste management and the impact it could have on their lives and the environment.
Recruiting people to join his cause was no easy task. The industry required passion, as it wasn't a place for quick success or high earnings. But Shiv's relentless dedication gradually paid off. He built a community that understood the value of managing waste effectively, driven by a shared purpose. The mantra of the 3R ZeroWaste industry became “Khoon, Paseena, Aasun”, a reminder of the blood, sweat, and tears that fueled their efforts toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Balancing Personal Challenges and Professional Goals
Shiv Rao Challa’s journey is not only a story of resilience but also one of balance between personal and professional life. Alongside his strong academic background in engineering and his passion for sports, Shiv faced the common challenge of managing both spheres. Often feeling homesick after visiting his family, he found solace in South Indian comedy movies to lift his spirits. His belief that "it's you who pushes yourself, not anyone else" kept him motivated, even in those low moments. Despite the emotional ups and downs, he maintained his dedication, understanding that personal challenges shouldn't interfere with professional growth.
Health was another challenge for Shiv as he navigated the demands of on-field work. Balancing physical health with work commitments is no easy feat, but Shiv learned that both are paths that must go hand in hand. His relentless efforts paid off—within four years, he successfully raised awareness about municipal solid waste and electronic waste management policies among 14 lakh people. Additionally, Shiv's NGO, 3RZw Environment Foundation, founded four years ago, aims to transform the lives of people working daily at the ground level. Through his work and the introduction of various government policies, he continues to impact lives, promoting a cleaner environment and better lifestyle for many.
Shiv launched an innovative application called Karma Coins, where individuals receive rewards, such as gold coins and other incentives, for engaging in eco-friendly activities. For instance, if someone chooses public transport over Uber or Ola, they earn rewards that encourage sustainable choices. He also highlights how housewives contribute to sustainability in their daily lives, adopting eco-friendly practices that promote a healthier environment. By tackling these pressing issues and implementing various government policies, Shiv continues to impact lives, promoting a cleaner environment and better lifestyles for many.
