Post completion of the UP Investors Summit and signing of over 11 MoUs worth Rs 586 crores for investment in leather industry, the government is looking forward to set up the Kanpur Unnao leather cluster.
Over 450 acres of land near Senpurab Para village at Hamirpur Road, Kanpur is identified for the planned leather cluster.
Once established the cluster is expected to generate employment for over 3,500 people.
Commenting over the latest development, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, CR Chaudhary informed that the centre has given its approval to the leather cluster in the region. Once state government sends proposal regarding the establishing of the cluster, work would start.
Informing of the government’s stance towards leather industry, Chaudhary informed that in the last financial year (2016-17), the centre got over Rs 21,777 crore in foreign exchange from the leather industry.
“It was from the leather industry that the union government got highest ever FDI of 60.08 billion US dollar in the last financial year,” Chaudhary said.
Dismissing reports that the leather MSMEs are planning to shift out from the state, Ranvir Prasad, MD, UPSIDC said that this is just a rumor.
“There have been lot rumors about leather industries of Kanpur being targeted and being shifted to any other location. I assure you that leather units of Kanpur are not going anywhere,”he added.
